Brazil Pilot: Afogados
SELF-TESTING BECOMES A POWERFUL TOOL IN THE PUBLIC HEALTH SYSTEM AND SHIFTS THE INDIVIDUAL SELF-CARE PARADIGM
FIND partnered with the Municipality of Afogados da Ingazeira to introduce Self-Testing as part of the mandatory national testing program
The key gaps that were identified and addressed through the pilots included:
- High burden of the public health system during the pandemic.
- High burden on employers to deploy testing programmes to avoid factory closures.
- High risk of COVID-19 transmission at the workplace.
- Limited access to COVID-19 Self-Tests; only available in pharmacies at a high price.
- Limited knowledge and awareness about COVID-19 Self-Tests, particularly among non healthcare professionals.

Self-Testing & Self-Care
Optimization of COVID-19 self-testing service delivery strategies to different contexts and populations is key to reduce transmission and improve access to care. FIND and the Health Secretariat of Afogados da Ingazeira in Pernambuco, Brazil, with the support from Antakly, have implemented an innovative self-testing model to increase the access to diagnostics for school and healthcare staff and reduce COVID-19 transmission at schools, healthcare centers and households across urban and rural areas in the Afogados municipality. This model leverages the Brazilian public health system (SUS) and has a focus on raising awareness on the importance of self-care.
